Gold Coast Continues To Lead International Tourism Turnaround | 9 June 2010

International visitors to the Gold Coast increased 5% in the 12 months from March 2009 to March 2010, and they spent just over $1 billion in the tourism capital according to figures released today by Tourism Research Australia.

Gold Coast Tourism CEO Martin Winter said the positive gain was made even more satisfying with the achievement of statistical increases in Japanese (up by 5%), Chinese (up by 15%), and United Kingdom (up 22%) visitors, three markets which have remained the focus of increased efforts by the destination marketing organisation.

“These figures again demonstrate how Gold Coast Tourism is leading Australia’s tourism industry and clearly show our international strategy to be working, proven by our ability to attract a 5 per cent increase in international visitors, he said.

International Visitors and Spend on the Gold Coast

International Visitors = 829,000 (up 5%)
International Visitor Spend = $1.019 billion (up 1%)

Top Three International Source Markets by Visitor Number for the Gold Coast

New Zealand Visitors = 207,000 (steady 0%)
Japan Visitors = 114,000 (up 5%)
China Visitors = 106,000 (up 15%)

Best Performing International Source Markets by Visitor Growth for the Gold Coast

United Kingdom Visitors = 82,000 (up 22%)
China Visitors = 106,000 (up 15%)
Japan Visitors = 114,000 (up 5%)
