Gold Coast Maintains Strong International Interest | 15 December 2010

International visitors to the Gold Coast increased 6% over the year ending September 2010,and they spent $998 million (down 4%) on their trips to the tourism capital according to figures released today by Tourism Research Australia.

Gold Coast Tourism CEO Martin Winter said the positive gain was made even more satisfying with the achievement of increases in Japanese (up by 3%), Chinese (up 19%), and United Kingdom (up 8%) visitors, three markets which have been the focus of increased efforts by the destination marketing organisation.

“The Gold Coast continues to lead the recovery for the Australian tourism industry, defying state and national trends in key International visitor markets,” said GCT CEO Martin Winter.

“Our ability to attract a 6% increase in international visitors is a credit to the city’s wide
popularity and the positive work of our tourism businesses which are out there fighting for every tourist,” he added.

International Visitors and Spend on the Gold Coast
• International Visitors = 842,000 (up 6%)
• International Visitor Spend = $998 million (down 4%)

Top Three International Source Markets by Visitor Number for the Gold Coast
• New Zealand Visitors = 205,000 (up 1%)
• Japan Visitors = 116,000 (up 3%)
• China Visitors = 114,000 (up 19%)

Best Performing International Source Markets by Visitor Growth
• China Visitors = 114,000 (up 19%)
• United Kingdom Visitors = 78,000 (up 8%)
• Japan Visitors = 116,000 (up 3%)
