MEDIA RELEASE Wednesday 24 June, 2009

GOLD COAST TOURISM CEO APPOINTED ICCA CHAIRMAN

Gold Coast Tourism CEO Martin Winter has been appointed Chairman of the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) Asia Pacific.

Mr Winter will utilise his 30 years of tourism industry experience to positively influence ICCA’s representation of 150 government tourism organisations, convention centres, convention and visitor bureax and private suppliers in the Asia Pacific region.

“The business events sector continues to show strong growth throughout Asia Pacific, generating an estimated $504 million for the Gold Coast alone.

“I believe ICCA can build on this success even though the current global climate is increasingly challenging,” he said.

“I am pleased to have the opportunity to build on the solid foundations established by outgoing Chairman Anthony Wong, our goal now is to provide new educational opportunities and business tools that can be easily accessed by the industry throughout the region and applied locally.”

“Developing destinations and those new to the industry will see particular benefit from our work and the region as a whole stands to increase international market share as it grows its standards of professionalism.”

Mr Winter’s international business tourism credentials are a significant asset for Gold Coast Tourism which has recently established the Gold Coast Convention Bureau as a vehicle to increase the city’s sales and marketing capacity in this lucrative tourism sector.

ICCA Asia Pacific is headquartered in Kuala Lumpur and is the peak meetings, incentives, conferences and conventions industry body for the Asia Pacific region.

Other new appointments to the ICCA Asia Pacific executive team include Steve Kim (Director of Marketing at Daejeon CVB Korea) as Deputy and Treasurer and Jason Yeh (Chief Executive at GIS Group Chinese Taipei) as Education Officer.
